AUTHOR - Rowling J.K.
GENRE - Children's Fiction
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a fancy novel
written by British author J.K. Rowling and the seventh and final novel of the
main Harry Potter series. It was released on 14 July 2007 in the United Kingdom
by Bloomsbury Publishing,, in the United
States by Scholastic, and in Canada by Raincoast Books. The novel chronicles
the events directly following Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2005) and
the final confrontation between the wizards Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.
Throughout the six previous novels in the series, the main
character Harry Potter has struggled with the difficulties of adolescence along
with being famous as the only person ever to survive the Killing Curse. The
curse was cast by Tom Riddle, better known as Lord Voldemort, a powerful evil
wizard who murdered Harry's parents and attempted to kill Harry as a baby, due
to a prophecy which claimed Harry would be able to stop him. As an orphan,
Harry was placed in the care of his Muggle (non-magical) relatives Petunia
Dursley and Vernon Dursley, with their son Dudley Dursley.
Major Characters
Harry Potter
The protagonist of the series, Harry has been left a
seemingly impossible task by Dumbledore: to track down and destroy Voldemort’s
remaining Horcruxes. He is guided by his love for his friends and shows courage
throughout the book, sacrificing himself to destroy the piece of Voldemort’s
soul in his body.
Ronald Weasly
Best friend of Harry Potter, Ron is the second youngest of
the seven Weasley kids. Although he struggles to be seen in the shadows, his
heart is pure and he plays a significant role in destroying the Horcruxes. He
is fond of Hermione but often feels insecure about himself, until Hermione
admits a mutual love
Hermione Granger
Best friend of Harry Potter, Hermione was born to Muggle
parents and is regarded as the “brightest witch of her age.” She is
exceptionally talented and charms many objects to aid in their quest for the
Horcruxes. She loves books and will often turn to them for solutions. She
erases herself from her parents’ memories and hides them in Australia to
protect them. She admits her love for Ron when he insists they protect the
house-elves, a cause she has cared about for many years.
Albus Dumbledore
Former Headmaster of Hogwarts, Dumbledore guided Harry, even
though he hid information from Harry out of love to protect him. Although
deceased in this book, he remains a presence. He defeated the dark wizard
Grindelwald in 1945, but as a young boy he himself was tempted by the powers of
the Deathly Hallows
Severus Snape
The man who killed Dumbledore, and a professor at Hogwarts,
who later becomes headmaster. Before killing Dumbledore, Snape had been both a
member of Dumbledore’s Order of the Phoenix and one of Voldemort’s Death
Eaters. Dumbledore steadfastly believed Snape to be spying for him against
Voldemort, and Voldemort believed Snape to be his spy against Dumbledore.
Though numerous members of the Order and the Death Eaters suspect Snape of
being a traitor to their respective causes, Snape’s true loyalties are a
mystery throughout most of the series
